4. MLIS PROGRAMME COORDINATOR
Practicum Home | Responsibilities
INFO 0590 is a required, non-credit course administered by the MLIS Program Coordinator.
4.1. Responsibilities
- Informs MLIS students about Practicum requirements during the annual fall-term Information Session.
- Screens all Practicum Work Placement Applications and consults individually with students about potential Practicum placements.
- Advises students on the acceptability of pre-admission, pre-graduation or formal Internship employment for the purposes of the Extended Work Placement Practicum option.
- Negotiates Practicum placements with organizations within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
- With permission of the student, supplies information to the workplace supervisor about the student's background, courses completed, and type of placement requested.
- Sends a Notice of Placement to the student, explaining that a Practicum placement has successfully been arranged.
- Arranges the initial contact between the student and the supervisor.
- Consults with students and Supervisors about placements outside the Halifax Regional Municipality
- If the work performance is not acceptable for a passing grade, works with the Supervisor and the student in an advisory capacity
- Ensures that the details of the Practicum are worked out to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
- Is available for consultation by either party throughout the period of the Practicum.
- Contacts the supervisor at the conclusion of the placement. Obtains feedback about the relevance of the School's curriculum to this particular placement both from the student and from the supervisor.
- Evaluates the student's report during the final preparatory stage before the report is forwarded to the Practicum supervisor.
- Forwards an electronic copy of the student’s Practicum Report to the Supervisor
- Provides an opportunity for students to read the Supervisor’s Report
- Officially approves the Practicum report, and sends acknowledgements to the student and supervisor.
- Assigns the Pass/Fail grade for INFO 0590
