3.1. Supervisor ResponsibilitiesThe Supervisor assumes responsibility for organizing the student's placement by:
- Scheduling the different stages of the placement and appointing area supervisors (if applicable)
- Communicating the details of the placement to the student and the MLIS Program Coordinator prior to the placement commencement
- Functioning as the principal contact with the School and reporting any concerns or difficulties to the MLIS Program Coordinator.
- Being available during regular business hours to counsel the student, or to be consulted by the student.
- Reviewing the progress of the Practicum, assessing the student's performance and voicing observations regarding the placement.
3.2. The Supervisor's Report*
The Supervisor prepares and submits their Supervisor’s Report to the MLIS Program Coordinator by e-mail or regular mail (School of Information Management, Faculty of Management, Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building, Dalhousie University, 6100 University Avenue, Halifax, Nova Scotia B3H 3J5, Canada) by the required date:
- 100 hour Practicum Work Placements: two weeks after completion of the placement
- Extended Work Placements: February 1 for students intending to graduate in May
The report should provide an assessment of the student’s performance from a professional perspective and may include, but is not limited to, consideration of the following points:
- professional & collegial attitude
- ability to follow instructions
- ability to work independently
- adaptability
- ability to apply theory
- resourcefulness and initiative
- thoroughness
- preparedness for the duties performed
- preparedness for the Information Management profession
Additional comments are very much appreciated and may accompany the Practicum Supervisor’s Report form.
*NOTE: This report is not required if the Practicum Supervisor wrote a letter of reference for the student at the time of admission to SIM.
